Goose was the Christmas bird long before turkey took over, and anyone who has had a good one tends to go back to it. It is all dark meat, nearer to beef than to poultry, and it does not dry out on you the way a turkey can.
Ours are free range Appledore geese, traditionally reared on the open grass paddocks of their farm in Kent, where they live a long life on a natural diet and plenty of grass.
A goose carries far more fat than a turkey, which is rather the point, because it bastes itself as it cooks and you will pour off several jars of goose fat along the way. For some people that fat is worth nearly as much as the bird, and it will see your roast potatoes through to spring.
Worth knowing that a goose has a big frame, so it feeds fewer people than the same weight of turkey. A 4kg bird will feed four, 5kg six and 6kg eight, and it is worth going a size up if you want cold goose on Boxing Day, which is half the reason for having one in the first place.
If you are ordering a free range goose for Christmas, do it early, because we only get so many.

We deliver across the county of Surrey, and throughout the UK.
- Delivery costs £5 on all orders.
- Whenever possible we make local deliveries ourselves.
- If we can't deliver ourselves, we use DPD's next-day service.
Delivery lead time and days
We need two working days to prepare your order. Then, delivery will be made on the next Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.
Your order confirmation email will contain a planned delivery date. If you need to re-arrange delivery you can reply and let us know.

A brilliant butchers
A brilliant butchers – Nathan and the team are great. Really fresh produce, with good selection and excellent cuts for the amateur chefs. A lot of the beef and lamb is all grass fed which is a bonus and all sourced locally. I live just down the road and this is my go to butchers for everything from BBQ to a Sunday roast.
